Hat Head Family Get Together

When my Mum was a little girl, two of her siblings were adopted out, or at least that’s what they were told. For many years, it was just one of those quiet family stories – something spoken about occasionally, but with no real answers. Attempts were made over time to trace them, but nothing ever came of it, and it seemed like one of those questions that might never be resolved.

That all changed when my aunt decided to send her DNA away to AncestryDNA. Not long after, a match appeared – one that would slowly unravel a long-lost connection. It turned out to be the daughter of my Mum’s brother who had been adopted. After all those years, a missing piece of our family story had finally been found, and it felt almost surreal that something so simple could reconnect generations.

My family all come from the Hat Head / Kempsey area, so it felt only right that this long-awaited meeting would happen there. A family get-together BBQ and dinner was organised, bringing together people who had never met before but were connected in the most meaningful way. There was a mix of excitement, nerves, curiosity, and emotion in the air – everyone wondering what it would feel like to finally meet.

Before heading home from the gathering, I took a short walk with my Mum. It was a quiet moment before what would be a very special and emotional day. The weather couldn’t quite make up its mind – switching between rain, overcast skies, and bursts of sunshine – but in a way, it felt fitting. It mirrored the emotions of the day: unpredictable, layered, and full of meaning.

I took these photos during that walk, wanting to capture not just the scenery, but the feeling of the moment. Looking back at them now, they remind me of how powerful family connections can be, even after years of separation. It was more than just a get-together – it was the beginning of a new chapter, where stories could finally be shared, and relationships could begin to grow.
